Colouring Modesty

Post  Willie Garvin on Fri Sep 26, 2008 1:38 pm

I've always liked Jim Holdaway's Modesty and this drawing is, for me, the definitive portrait of Modesty.

But I wanted to see it in colour, so let's see what I came up with:

At first I really liked it but after I've looked at it for a few seconds my attention goes back to the original, its almost as if this one leaves more to the imagination. Whenever I'm reading the books I never really see what MB or WG look like, whereas for you lot that read the strips you must identify Modesty as the she is drawn even when reading the books?

Nice job though, I like both.

That IS a great colouring job!
I'm not sure which I like best; I'd need to see the coloured one in the context of an entire coloured strip (that should keep you busy for a week or two). Wink

(btw, Willie, PM'd you, so next time you're around if you can check your inbox...)

Good LORD, that was fast. Someone got the week off work?

I have to say, I really like the coloured version! I'm not much of a comic / graphic novel reader, so to me, the black and white ones, although still beautiful, are rather 'flat' in comparison to your coloured ones (and more eye-fatiguing).

So now I have to know: what software did you do this in?

I agree, in context of the entire strip it looks great, you do realise that now if I buy any strips I'm going to feel cheated because there in black and white..........

No, these were done quite a while ago.

The car is a Jensen FF.

(First high-performance car with 4-wheel drive and anti-lock brakes, way back in 1966 if you are interested. Forget the claims of Audi. . .)

So it's very fitting that Modesty and Willie should be driving such a 1960s icon.

The panels were coloured for the Jensen magazine that I produce, but at the end of the day, the copyright / syndication holders would not let me reproduce the strips in colour, so back to the original black & white.

I do it all in Photoshop, by the way.

It's a car club magazine, very boring I imagine, unless you're into Jensens!

But multi-award winning all the same.

It looks FANTASTIC! Super cover - and I love the street! Where was the photo taken?

Is the magazine your full-time job?
